Kansas City Chiefs safety Daniel Sorensen missed time during Tuesday’s practice due to a knee injury. He’s likely to miss part of the regular season.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been knicked up with minor injuries during the last few weeks of training camp. Most of the injuries that have been reported have been minor knicks in which the team has been cautious and allowing players to have some time to rest. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, safety Daniel Sorensen who suffered a knee injury will have to undergo surgery which will likely mean he misses part of the beginning of the regular season.
NFL Network’s Herbie Teope mentioned on Twitter that Sorensen’s injury was not an ACL tear which brings some relief. If that had been the case, Sorensen would have missed the entire season. Regardless, it seems that the Chiefs will have to move around some pieces as Sorensen has been the starter next to fellow safety Eric Berry in the defense.
Kansas City luckily has some depth at the position including backup safety Eric Murray and rookie safety Armani Watts. Last season, without the presence of Berry on the field, Sorensen was asked to fill that role. It resulted in the former BYU product being exposed as he struggled to play some of the major roles that Berry does typically.
Many fans were looking forward to Sorensen getting back to playing his own role in the defense in 2018. For now, Murray will likely slide into the starting defense in his absence while Armani Watts comes in for specific packages.
The excitement for Watts has been high leading up to training camp and fans are excited to see the young safety get some starting reps. Watts is an extremely explosive player that brings some aggression to the defense. The Chiefs want to bring him along slowly, but they may have to play him a little sooner than expected due to Sorensen’s injury.
