The Kansas City Chiefs have the best situation for a first-year quarterback in recent history. What are reasonable comparisons for Patrick Mahomes?

The Kansas City Chiefs are almost ready to begin training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. Most of the hype respectively go to the second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes as Chiefs fans enter unfamiliar territory. Given the statements from head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach, fans have every reason to be full throttle on the hype train.

It’s not like the Chiefs don’t want fans to slow the hype train down either. If they had any concern about the hype surrounding Patrick Mahomes, Veach wouldn’t be releasing statements saying that he’s one of the best he’s ever seen.

With that being said, there has been the discussion all offseason about what reasonable expectations are for Mahomes in 2018. Whether you are optimistic or pessimistic about this season, there is not anything to compare the situation that Mahomes is currently in with other quarterbacks.

Between the experience that Mahomes got last season working with former starting quarterback Alex Smith, what he has learned in that time, his coaching staff, and his weapons around him, no situation is reasonable to compare to. We all want to compare him to other quarterbacks around the league or “rookie” quarterbacks in NFL history.

I wanted to take the time to discuss why we can’t compare Mahomes to other situations as a base argument when talking about expectations and predictions. This is not to say there is no way he can not hit big numbers or that he will, but merely that the statistics that fans are basing their arguments on are flawed.
