The Kansas City Chiefs ranked highly among the NFL coaching staff coming in at number five with Andy Reid and Bob Sutton the main focus.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has long been known as one of the best coaches in the NFL. Not only is he a great head coach, but he has helped other head coaches around the league reach their potential. Currently, in the NFL, seven head coaches at one point worked under Andy Reid before earning their head coaching role.

Two of those coaches in Doug Pederson of the Philadelphia Eagles and John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens have won the Lombardi Trophy. While Reid has yet to leave his fingerprints on the Super Bowl trophy, he is still considered one of the top coaches in the league.

Reid has been known as an offensive-minded genius around the league for many years. Ranking in the top ten in scoring 11 of his 19 years in the league, Reid has shown his abilities and what he can do with just about any style of quarterback. From Donovan McNabb to Michael Vick, to Alex Smith, and soon Patrick Mahomes, we have seen all sorts of offenses under Andy Reid.

Reid has won 11 playoff games during his time as a head coach. Unfortunately, only one of those is with Kansas City. Under Reid the last five seasons, the Chiefs have made the playoffs four of those seasons. Even in 2013, Reid’s first season with the Chiefs after the organization went 2-14 the year prior, Reid led the team to the playoffs.

Entering his 20th consecutive year as a head coach in the NFL, Reid and his coordinators reach number five on a “Coaching Staff Power Rankings” article done by Bleacher Report. Given his coaching tree, his success, and even the success of defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, Bleacher Report is very high on the Chiefs coaching staff.

That’s right, they mentioned Bob Sutton. While we are all a bit uneasy with Sutton after last years performance, he has been a good defensive coordinator for the Chiefs the last five seasons. Kansas City was clear on the problem is the talent on the defensive side of the ball following last seasons disaster.

In the five seasons that Sutton has commanded the Chiefs defense, they’ve ranked in the top ten in points per game four out of the five seasons. The first three seasons it ranked in the top five. Last season being the one season where they ranked out of the top ten, that’s a pretty good streak.

While the defense may give up too many yards for us to like, it has done its job keeping other teams out of the end zone. The bend-but-don’t-break defense has been annoying at times, but it does work as the defense has shown. The question will be if the Chiefs defense can get back on track in 2018 after a major overhaul on the defensive side of the ball?

Following Matt Nagy leaving to coach the Chicago Bears this offseason, Eric Bieniemy will take charge as offensive coordinator. As a former running backs coach, it will be fun to watch what he brings to the offense in 2018. Could he be another coordinator that finds a head coaching job in the next couple seasons? Only time will tell.
