BEST GAMES OF THE ANDY REID ERA

DECEMBER 28TH, 2014 VS SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

Picture this. It was the year 2014 and there was once an NFL franchise in San Diego known as the Chargers. All the Chargers had to do in the final week of the season was beat the Kansas City Chiefs and they’d be in the playoffs.

That scenario seemed even easier for the Bolts once it was announced that Alex Smith had a lacerated spleen and former Missouri Tiger great Chase Daniel would be under center for Kansas City. Daniel had gotten his first NFL start the year prior against the same Chargers, but this time the Chiefs actually had something to play for.

The Chiefs were 8-7 by the time week 17 rolled around and they still had a bleak chance to make the playoffs. A lot of things had to happen for them to clinch a playoff berth, however, so it was no small task.

All the Chargers had to do was win and they’d make the playoffs yet they couldn’t even make this a game. They scored just one touchdown through four quarters and the Chiefs were victorious by a score of 19-7. It wasn’t the most riveting game in the world, but it kept a division rival out of the playoffs. No, the Chiefs didn’t make it either, but at least they contributed to a divisional foe not getting in.

  • Chase Daniel went 16 of 27 for 157 yards.
  • This was the season in which no Chiefs wide receiver hauled in a touchdown all year. Now looking back at who their receivers were, it’s not too shocking.
  • Kansas City’s lone touchdown of the afternoon came when Travis Kelce recovered an offensive fumble in the end zone.
  • Cairo Santos kicked four field goals.
  • San Diego’s lone touchdown came on a one-yard rush by Branden Oliver.
  • Philip Rivers threw for 291 yards and two interceptions. He was sacked SEVEN times!
  • Kurt Coleman had both interceptions.
  • Justin Houston had four sacks, giving him 22.5 on the year. He was so close to breaking that all-time record!

My favorite part from this game was in the fourth quarter when it was obvious the Chargers weren’t going to complete the comeback and Philip Rivers was throwing a legitimate temper tantrum on the sideline. It was hilarious!

This was the first time the Chiefs had swept the Chargers since Rivers had been their full-time starter. Drew Brees was starting for San Diego the last time KC swept the Bolts. Yowzas.
