BEST GAMES OF THE ANDY REID ERA

SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2013 VS JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

The first game of the Andy Reid era was against the Jacksonville Jaguars on their home turf. The Jaguars might be fresh off an AFC Championship appearance, but in 2013 hopes were not high for them. In fact, they were typically in the basement of the AFC South and usually picking in the top five of the draft.

This game was actually a match-up of the two worst teams from the 2012 season. The difference, however, was that the Chiefs weren’t going to be slouches in 2013. The Jags couldn’t say the same thing.

Missouri Tigers product Blaine Gabbert was the quarterback then and was so bad that he was eventually replaced by now current Chiefs backup Chad Henne. There’s some fun KC tie-ins right there.

Early in the game, it looked like 2012 might be creeping back and it happened in an unusual way. Dustin Colquitt‘s punt was blocked for a safety in the first quarter and Chiefs fans were all thinking, “Well, here we go again…”

Fortunately, those two points were all that Jacksonville scored that Sunday. The Chiefs went on to score four unanswered touchdowns and won the first game of the Andy Reid era by a score of 28-2.

  • Alex Smith, in his first game as the Chiefs signal caller, went 21 of 34 for 173 yards and two touchdowns. A very typical Smith type of performance.
  • Jamaal Charles rushed for 77 yards and a score.
  • Donnie Avery and Junior Hemingway had the two touchdown receptions.
  • Anthony Sherman led the day in receiving with four receptions for 44 yards. You read that right.
  • Gabbert threw two picks, one intercepted by Brandon Flowers and the other by Tamba Hali.
  • Gabbert was sacked six times with Justin Houston totaling three on the former Mizzou man.

Chiefs fans really couldn’t have asked for a better intro for what was to come under Andy Reid. They began their tenure off 1-0 and dominated their opponent.
