BEST GAMES OF THE ANDY REID ERA

DECEMBER 31, 2017 VS DENVER BRONCOS

We all know why this one is included. It was the first start of Patrick Mahomes‘ NFL career! The Kansas City Chiefs had locked up the four-seed in the AFC playoffs and that meant they couldn’t move up or down in the standings.

With that said, the starters were going to get the season finale off. For Chiefs Kingdom, that meant it was finally time to see rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes in action. It was even better that he’d get his first start against the hated Denver Broncos.

The starters were getting the day off, but rookie Kareem Hunt wanted the rushing title for the season and only needed 30 some yards to obtain it. He would break the record with just one carry, taking the rock 35 yards to the house for a touchdown.

Mahomes didn’t throw a touchdown pass, but he still looked pretty good. The Chiefs decided to get cute later in the game and pulled Mahomes so that Tyler Bray could some playing time. Bray was absolutely awful and Mahomes was actually put back into the game, where he led his first ever NFL comeback.

  • Mahomes threw for 284 yards and an interception.
  • Anthony Sherman was the leading rusher, carrying the ball 14 times for 40 yards and a touchdown. He’s a fullback, in case you forgot.
  • This was the game that basically got Albert Wilson that sweet deal from the Dolphins, as he caught ten passes for 147 yards.
  • Demetrius Harris had a good game too, grabbing three passes for 73 yards.
  • Paxton Lynch got the start for Denver, throwing for 254 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Remember when the Chiefs almost drafted him?
  • Lynch was sacked five times and this was against mostly backups. Tanoh Kpassagnon had two of those five sacks.

With this win, the Chiefs had their fourth double digit winning season under Andy Reid with a 10-6 record. They went into the playoffs with a victory under their belt and this game showed the organization that Mahomes was ready to take the reigns.
