BEST GAMES OF THE ANDY REID ERA

JANUARY 9TH, 2016 VS HOUSTON TEXANS (WILD CARD ROUND)

After rattling off ten straight wins to close out the regular season, the KC Chiefs earned an unlikely playoff berth and traveled to Houston for the Wild Card round. The Texans won the measly AFC South and weren’t a terrifying team by any means. With that said, however, it was a playoff game and the Chiefs hadn’t been victorious in one of those for over two decades.

That changed on January 9th, 2016, as the Chiefs not only won their first playoff game in over 20 years, but shutout the Texans on the road. It wasn’t even close, as the Chiefs won 30-0 and didn’t even play their best football.

Things got off to an electric start for the Chiefs when Knile Davis took the opening kickoff 106 yards down the field for a touchdown to put the Chiefs up 7-0 early. From there, it was mostly field goals and bad quarterback play from Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer that gave the Chiefs all the momentum on the day.

While it wasn’t a super compelling game, it was the first Chiefs playoff win since the 1993 season and the first postseason victory under Andy Reid. It was also the 11th straight win for Kansas City and fans thought that this might be the beginning of a playoff run. Spoiler alert: It wasn’t.

  • Alex Smith went 17 of 22 for 190 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
  • Spencer Ware rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown.
  • Chris Conley had the lone receiving touchdown.
  • Travis Kelce hauled in eight receptions for 128 yards.
  • Brian Hoyer threw four picks. Similar to the Denver game, those interceptions were by Berry, Mauga, Parker, and Peters.
  • Allen Bailey had two of the three sacks on Hoyer. Jaye Howard had the other one.
  • This was the game in which Eric Fisher completely owned J.J. Watt and pushed him to the ground.

Even though this broke the Chiefs’ playoff loss streak, a lot of fans seemed to have forgotten this win happened. I get why, as the Texans weren’t really worthy of being in the playoffs in the first place, but hey… You can only play the teams scheduled and that’s exactly what the Chiefs did.

This being the first (and to this point, only) playoff win under Andy Reid made it a must-include on the list… even if fans don’t seem to remember it.
