NUMBER 7: TYLER THIGPEN

2008

It’s definitely easier to rank quarterbacks when they appeared in more games and that was the case with Tyler Thigpen. Poor Thigpen gets a bad rep by Chiefs fans. If one was easily available and less than $20, I’d consider buying a Tyler Thigpen jersey. That’s how much I liked ol’ Thiggy back in the day.

Thigpen took over when both Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard went down with injuries and ended up starting 11 games in the 2008 season. While Thigpen would win just one game, his numbers weren’t awful. It was the defense that let the team down week after week that season.

The Coastal Carolina grad threw for 2,608 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in his 11 starts while rushing for 386 yards and three touchdowns. That’s what I always liked about Thigpen’s game was that he was capable of making plays both through the air and on the ground.

For some reason the Chiefs opted to keep Croyle on their roster over Thigpen in 2009 and that’s a decision that I still don’t understand to this day. Thigpen played for the Dolphins and Bills and spent time with the Browns before being out of the league after the 2012 season.

A lot of people weren’t fond of Tyler Thigpen and I get it, the Chiefs were awful in 2008. My argument, however, is that Thigpen actually wasn’t that bad. Had the team had anything close to resembling an NFL defense, the Chiefs would have had five or six more wins in 2008.

Team Thigpen for life!
