NUMBER 8: CHASE DANIEL

2013-2015

Chase Daniel has been one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL for about a decade now and he spent three years with the Kansas City Chiefs. The former Missouri Tiger was brought in right when the new wave of Andy Reid, John Dorsey, and Alex Smith arrived to town and Daniel was instantly the backup to Smith.

Daniel started two games for the Chiefs in his three years as the backup. In 2013, the Chiefs had locked up the five-seed in the playoffs, so the starters got the week off in the regular season finale. Daniel went 21 of 30 for 200 yards and a touchdown in that game, but unfortunately the refs screwed up and the Chiefs would lose that one.

Daniel’s second start came in the 2014 season finale when Smith had to sit out due to a lacerated spleen. Daniel threw for 157 yards and led the Chiefs to a victory, which gave them a winning record on the season.

Some might wonder why Daniel was ranked this high and the answer is that he did what he was supposed to do in both games. He really should have been 2-0 in his two starts, but the refs failed him in the first one. The Chiefs had to have a lot of things happen in 2014 to make the playoffs, but Daniel did his part and got the win for his team. The rest of the things didn’t pan out though.

Chiefs fans felt confident in Daniel starting and that’s the sure sign of a good backup. He is still making good money as a backup quarterback, spending time with the Eagles, Saints (second stint), and Bears since he left Kansas City.
