NUMBER 3: PATRICK MAHOMES

2017, 2018

When I first wrote this post after the 2017 season wrapped up, Patrick Mahomes sat at number eight. After one year as a starter, he’s climbed all the way to number three.

We all know the history with Mahomes.

The Chiefs jumped up to draft him tenth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft and from then on, Patrick Mahomes was going to be the future at the quarterback spot. That was an unfamiliar feeling for Chiefs fans, as the team had not drafted a signal caller in the first round in over three decades before taking Mahomes.

Had Alex Smith not gone on to have an incredible season in 2017, Mahomes probably would have had an opportunity to start more than one game that year. Unfortunately for him, Smith had a career year and was only sitting for the season finale because the Chiefs had locked up the division and couldn’t advance any higher or lower with their playoff seeding.

Mahomes’ first start gave the fans a lot of confidence, but we had no idea his first full year as the Chiefs starter would be as special as it was. Mahomes went on to throw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in year one as the Chiefs signal caller and he won the freaking MVP award as a first year starter.

Yes, a CHIEF won the MVP! How remarkable!

If the Chiefs had a defense in 2018, the team could have played in the Super Bowl and potentially won it, but unfortunately their defense couldn’t make a stop when needed. Mahomes still managed to get the good guys all the way to the AFC Championship Game though and Chiefs Kingdom knows this is only the beginning for Mahomes Mania.
