NUMBER 6: DAMON HUARD

2006-2008

Some might be puzzled as to why Damon Huard is ranked this high, but the reason for that is because he had a very impressive 2006 season for the Chiefs. Trent Green went down with an injury that year and Huard stepped in and went 5-3 as a starter. He’d throw for 11 touchdowns and just one interception that season with 1,878 yards through the air.

The Chiefs squeaked their way into the playoffs in 2006 and then-head coach Herm Edwards had a decision to make. He could start Green, who had struggled since returning to action, or he could start the red hot Huard. We all know what happened. Edwards went with Green and the Chiefs got curb stomped in that playoff game.

Would they have won with Damon Huard starting? Probably not. It was against the Colts in Indianapolis and we all know that the postseason is not kind to the Kansas City Chiefs.

While Huard threw for 2,257 yards in 2007, he had more interceptions than touchdowns. The following year he struggled to stay healthy and was out of the league after that 2008 campaign. Him being the sixth best starting quarterback since 2000 is really sad, but that 2006 season was a pretty impressive outing for Damon Huard and that’s ultimately what landed him so high.

Huard kept the Chiefs’ playoff hopes alive in 2006 and that’s something for sure. It would have been understandable for him to step in and struggle, but the guy threw just one pick all season long. Not too shabby for a backup quarterback.
