JAKOB JUNIS

The Royals might have found a gem in Jakob Junis in the 29th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. The 25-year old starting pitcher has thrown 61.1 innings so far this season and has an ERA of 3.52 in ten starts.

With how much the Royals have struggled to draft and develop starting pitchers, it’d be tough to see them part ways with Junis. He’s proof that they can draft and develop a pitcher and he definitely could be next year’s Opening Day starter if he continues to pitch this well .

Junis will not hit free agency until 2024, meaning he could play a role when the new wave of players are ready to start coming up to the big leagues. For that reason alone, I don’t see the Royals getting rid of Junis, but if they were offered a King’s ransom, that’d be another story.

Junis is a young, cheap player and he’s one of the few highlights for the Royals this season. He should be safe for the next several years.
