KC Chiefs: Tony Gonzalez to be inducted into Ring of Honor in December
It’s been a long time coming, but the KC Chiefs are finally etching Tony Gonzalez’s name into the Ring of Honor this season. The ceremony will take place December 13th when the Chiefs play the Chargers in primetime.
It’s hard to believe, but Tony Gonzalez hasn’t suited up in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform in ten years now. His final year as a Chief was in 2008 and after that he played for another five years as a member of the Atlanta Falcons before calling it a career in 2013.
Prior to becoming a Falcon, Gonzalez was a Chief for 12 years. When Gonzalez first joined the team in 1997, the team was one of the best in the league. By the early 2000s, however, they sunk into irrelevancy for a bit.
Sure, every few years the Chiefs would make it to the playoffs, but they’d never make it past the first round. During those 12 seasons in Kansas City, Gonzalez never won a playoff game. After the Chiefs struggled to win games in both 2007 and 2008, nobody blamed Gonzalez for wanting to play for a better team and have a real shot at making it to a Super Bowl.
Gonzalez had worn the Chiefs red and white for 12 years and rarely complained. Not only that, but he was one of the few players worth watching in Kansas City during that time. Even after Gonzalez was traded, we all knew that someday he’d be put into the KC Chiefs Ring of Honor and that time is finally coming this December.
The ceremony will take place on December 13th, which is when the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday Night Football. It’s cool enough that Gonzalez will have his name put into the Ring of Honor, but it’s even cooler that he’ll be honored at a primetime game where the lights will be bright and the crowd will be rocking.
There’s no better way to honor Tony G than giving him that kind of environment. He gave Kansas City everything he had during his 12 years as a Chief and now it’s time to honor him the best way possible.
Gonzalez finished his Chiefs career with 916 receptions for 10,940 yards and 76 touchdowns. He was a ten-time Pro Bowler as a Chief and leads the team in receiving yards even a decade after playing for the team.
Even non-Chiefs fans loved Tony Gonzalez when he was playing the game. He truly was a one of a kind and Chiefs Kingdom was lucky to have him on their team.
December 13th will be a big game due to it being the KC Chiefs’ only home game of the season, but now the lights will be even brighter. Time to honor one of the greats!
