There are currently eight running backs listed on the Kansas City Chiefs roster. This is a high number, but how many of these running backs will actually make it to the final roster when the season begins?

Kansas City Chiefs fans know how quickly the running backs room can change just by looking back at 2017. Jamaal Charles was cut early last offseason, Spencer Ware was out for the season after going to down to injury in the preseason, unexpected rookie sensation Kareem Hunt stepped up and led the league in rushing, and CJ Spiller was released and re-signed more times than Harrison Butker missed field goals all season. It was an interesting season at the position to say the least.

It’s already been a fascinating offseason for the Chiefs running backs in 2018. Akeem Hunt, who held a roster spot last season, has been placed on the reserve/PUP list after failing a physical and clearing waivers. The Chiefs also brought in three different backs with the last name Williams – former Miami Dolphin Damien Williams, former Arizona Cardinal Kerwynn Williams, and an undrafted rookie from LSU, Darrel Williams

Familiar names like Anthony Sherman, Spencer Ware, and Charcandrick West are still there, but it does appear that they may have a little competition to keep their roster spots. The Chiefs have brought in another fullback, undrafted LSU rookie J.D. Moore.

Will he make a big enough splash to replace the Shermanator? Could the addition of bigger running backs like Damien Williams and Darrel Williams spell the end for Spencer Ware? Is it possible that West might get lost in the shuffle?

Let’s take a look at who is most likely to be on the active roster when the Chiefs head for L.A. in early September. Since the Chiefs have traditionally carried three half backs and one fullback it’s most likely they will do this again. So, here goes…
