Kansas City Chiefs: Dissecting the quarterback depth chart
By Kyle Hull
Quarterback Number one – Patrick Mahomes II
I give you a free pass to call me “Captain Obvious” here, because why in the world would Mahomes not be the starter?
Alex Smith had his opportunities as the starter but failed in many aspects. Don’t get me wrong, he did unexplainable things for the organization, however, it was time for him to move on for the benefit of the Kansas City Chiefs, and possibly himself.
This is where, and why you insert Mahomes. The Chiefs traded up to get him in the 2017 NFL Draft for a reason. He had his one year to develop, and now it is time for his own era to begin. An era that is highly anticipated by the Kansas City Chiefs, and the entirety of the NFL.
The Potential of Mahomes
In week 17 of the 2017 season, Mahomes was the starter for the Kansas City Chiefs, for the sake of Smith’s health for the playoffs.
During his first career start in the NFL, Mahomes showed some jaw-dropping flashes. With 22/35 passing and 284 total yards, Mahomes lead his team to victory. (Is this when I should mention he won the game with his second, and third string teammates, against the first-string Denver Broncos?)
Now, if you did not find that game as exciting as I did, either something is wrong with you, or I get excited far too easy. Let me know what you think of this in the comments below.
Mahomes will bring a whole new element to the offense this season. For starters – his ability to take chances. Since this article is not a Mahomes film breakdown, I won’t get into much detail here. I will say one thing, with all of the confidence in the world. I fully expect Mahomes to be one of, if not the best young quarterbacks in the NFL.
Sure, there will be growing pains along the way, but that is just part of the learning and adjusting process in the NFL. 2018 is a new era for the Kansas City Chiefs, and it all starts with number 15 behind center.
