Kansas City Chiefs: Ten players who must have big seasons in 2018
NUMBER 3: SAMMY WATKINS
Brett Veach has heard everyone talking about what an offense this is going to be in 2018, so he added one more piece to the puzzle. Sammy Watkins was arguably the hottest name on the wide receiver market, so Veach outbid the other suitors and landed the former first round pick.
Watkins didn’t live up to the hype in Buffalo, especially when you look at what the Bills gave up to acquire him in that draft (their first that year and their first and fourth rounders in 2015). He was traded to the Rams last year and while he did okay there, he still wasn’t the elite wide receiver we’d all been expecting before he was drafted.
The Chiefs have bought into the hype though and with Watkins set to make $48 million over the next three years ($30 million guaranteed), he’s now become a player who HAS to produce on the field. If the Chiefs only get 593 yards out of Watkins in 2018, that’ll be a disappointing year.
Watkins provides a legitimate red zone option for the KC offense and that’s hopefully where he’ll be utilized during his first year as a Chief. He had eight touchdowns for the Rams last year and Chiefs fans would gladly take that production.
For Watkins to live up to this hype, however, he HAS to be solid on the field. Hopefully this doesn’t end like the Jeremy Maclin saga did.
