The Chiefs move up again to plug holes in the D-line by selecting  Derrick Nnadi with the 75th pick overall.

Brent Veach continued his defensive makeover with the selection of Derick Nnadi, a 6’1″317-pound nose tackle from Florida State. Veach needed to replace the departed Bennie Logan. The athletic Nnadi goes a long way toward filling those shoes. The best part? Because he’s a rookie, he’ll do it for about six million less than Big Bennie.

The ex-Seminole was named third-team  All-ACC due to his 56 tackles, 10.5 for loss, and six sacks. That award followed up a first-team selection after the 2016 campaign.

Since he spent the majority of his time as a DT in a 4-3 base defense, there is some concern that he doesn’t have the size to play NT in a 3-4. He is a beast against the run but currently lags behind in his pass rushing capabilities.

The Chiefs understandably targeted run defense as a priority. While Nnadi doesn’t project as a three-down lineman, he will go a long way toward improving the Chiefs  28th-ranked rushing defense.

Can he contribute right away? – Yes. He looks to rotate with recently acquired Grandview native Xavier Williams.

Why was he still available? – Due to his lack of size and pass rush skills, most mock drafts had him as a day-three selection. Good chance he would have been there even if the Chiefs had not traded up.

Who did we pass up? – Sam Hubbard – DE – Ohio State, Rasheem Green – DE – USC, Orlando Brown – OT – Oklahoma
