EVERY CHIEFS FIRST ROUND PICK – 2020 NFL DRAFT: CLYDE EDWARDS-HELAIRE

After not having a first-round pick since the selection of Patrick Mahomes in 2017, the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs held the final pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, which was being held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chiefs could have gone in several different directions with this pick, but ultimately, they went with Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a running back out of LSU. Edwards-Helaire was coming into a similar situation, as he had won a National Championship with LSU just three months prior to hearing his name called by the defending champion Chiefs.

In 13 games, Edwards-Helaire had 181 carries for 803 yards and four touchdowns while also hauling in 36 receptions for 297 yards and a touchdown through the air. In total, he had 1,100 yards from scrimmage and while the Chiefs would have liked to have seen more from their first-round running back, the future looks bright with the LSU product.

Edwards-Helaire was the first running back the Chiefs took in the first round since they nabbed Larry Johnson back in 2003. Running backs’ values have decreased significantly since when Johnson was drafted, but the Chiefs needed a boost in their run game and hopefully, Edwards-Helaire gives them that much-needed boost.
