EVERY CHIEFS FIRST ROUND PICK – 2012 NFL DRAFT: DONTARI POE

Fans were a bit surprised to see the Chiefs go with Dontari Poe 11th overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. He appeared to be a boom or bust type player, coming from a smaller school in Memphis, and Chiefs Kingdom wasn’t sure if Poe was worthy of a first-round pick.

Instead, he went on to become a fan favorite and had a nice five-year career in Kansas City. During his five years as a Chief, Poe racked up 156 tackles and 13 sacks. He was a reliable run-stopper throughout his first few years, but when he became less effective in that area, it was pretty well known throughout that the Chiefs would probably move on from him after 2016.

Poe will be remembered most for his production on offense, as funny as that it is to type out. He had three total offensive touchdowns during his time as a Chief with two coming on the ground (both times against the Raiders in the “Hungry Pig Right” play) and another being through the air, in what will forever be remembered as the “Bloated Tebow Pass”.

The Bloated Tebow Pass was even funnier because it was against the Broncos in a blowout at Arrowhead on Christmas night. It was one of my favorite Chiefs memories and cemented Dontari Poe as a fan favorite amongst Chiefs fans.

While Poe would sign with the Falcons in 2017 and with the Panthers in 2018, we’ll always have Hungry Pig Right and the Bloated Tebow Pass. Good times.
