2018 NFL Mock Draft: First KC Chiefs mock draft after free agency
ROUND 4 – PICK 24 (124TH OVERALL): DJ REED, CB (KANSAS STATE)
The Chiefs go local in the fourth round with the selection of DJ Reed out of Kansas State. Reed fits a position of need and wouldn’t have to travel far for training camp.
Obviously cornerback would be an area that the Chiefs could improve on, but Reed was also well-known for his return abilities on special teams. He returned both a kick and a punt for touchdowns during his time in Manhattan.
As a corner, Reed totaled 47 tackles, nine defended passes, four interceptions, and recovered two fumbles last year for the Wildcats. While he’s a bit undersized for an NFL cornerback, Reed could make noise as a return specialist.
The Chiefs no longer have Marcus Peters, but they have David Amerson and Kendall Fuller as their likely two starting corners. That likely takes them out of drafting a cornerback early in the draft, but DJ Reed could be a nice depth piece. Maybe Reed would serve as a return specialist in his first year or two and learn from Amerson and Fuller before potentially getting thrown into the secondary.
What the experts are saying…
"Reed has the mental and physical makeup to become a solid pro as both a return man and a sub-package cornerback. -Lance Zierlein, NFL.com"
