ROUND 7: PICK 25 (243RD OVERALL) – LAVON COLEMAN, RB (WASHINGTON)

With their final pick in the 2018 NFL Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Lavon Coleman out of Washington. The running back position appears to be just fine with Kareem Hunt at the helm, not to mention Charcandrick West will be back and Spencer Ware should be returning from injury.

Even with those three on the roster, I like adding running back depth because it’s a position where injuries come easy. The Chiefs were fortunate to get Hunt into all 16 games a season ago, but we see how easy it is for a running back to get knocked out for an entire season early on.

If that were to happen (knock on wood please), I’m not suggesting that Lavon Coleman would be the solution, but he’s a depth piece. Remember in 2015 when the Chiefs lost Jamaal Charles? Knile Davis would go on to disappoint and that paved the way for Ware and West to take over. Both were nobodies before Charles got hurt.

Onto Coleman, he had a great 2016 campaign at Washington, rushing for 852 yards and seven touchdowns that year. His senior season wasn’t as impressive, but in total he finished his career with 374 carries for 2,000 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The best case scenario for Coleman to make it in the pros is for him to play well on special teams. He has the NFL running back size going for him, but his 2017 season was disappointing and that will make him a Day 3 pick at the very least.

"Coleman lacks dynamic tape from the 2017 season, but there might be a team who believes that he can get back to his 2016 form where he showed some ability to create for himself with elusiveness. — “Bottom Line” on Lavon Coleman, NFL.com’s Draft Profile"

I like this pick for the Chiefs because there’d be no immediate pressure to play him and he could end up contributing on special teams. KC has a reputation for fielding one of the best special teams units in the league and that could only help Coleman down the road.
