ROUND 3: PICK 14 (78TH OVERALL) – MARK ANDREWS, TE (OKLAHOMA)
The Chiefs have Travis Kelce at the tight end spot, but that’s it. If Kelce were to miss an extended period of time, Demetrius Harris isn’t coming into the game and taking over at the tight end spot. That’s why it’s critical for the Chiefs to pounce on a tight end early in the draft and they go with Mark Andrews in round three.
Andrews was Baker Mayfield’s top target in 2017, hauling in 62 receptions for 958 yards and eight touchdowns. This guy was a red zone maniac for the Sooners last year and it was no wonder why Mayfield felt so comfortable throwing the ball in his direction.
Andrews used to be a wideout, which explains his knack for being able to find the football. The biggest con on the Sooner tight end is that he has extremely poor blocking skills and that could be what causes his draft stock to plummet.
"Despite his size, he lacks the desire and fundamentals as a blocker which will hurt his standing with some teams. He should be able to find early catches and production as a solid pass-catching tight end in the league. — “Bottom Line” on Mark Andrews, NFL.com’s Draft Tracker"
Andrews’ offensive production nearly doubled between his sophomore and junior seasons, which is why I like him as a backup behind Kelce. At 6’5″ and 253 pounds, Mark Andrews would be yet another Chiefs tight end who is nearly impossible to bring down.
