ROUND 7: PICK 15 (233RD OVERALL) – RILEY FERGUSON, QB (MEMPHIS)

The quarterback position is a pressing need for the Chiefs even if it’s not in the starting role. We saw just how important a good backup quarterback can be for a team when the Philadelphia Eagles made it all the way to the Super Bowl and won with Nick Foles at the helm.

I’m not saying Riley Ferguson is going to do that for the Chiefs, but having him in the mix would be nice. More than likely, the Chiefs will opt to bring in a veteran to backup Mahomes, and that’s fine. Ferguson would be a decent third string option.

Ferguson spent two years as the signal caller for Memphis, throwing for 7,955 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 19 picks. Yes, those stats were just for two years and that’s the most eye popping thing about Ferguson is how tremendous his stats were in college.

The knock on Ferguson is that he tends to feel more pressure in the pocket than what exists and that leads to panicked throws. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com states that Ferguson probably won’t ever be more anything more than a backup and that’s perfect for what the Chiefs are looking for in this year’s draft. They already have their guy, now time to get his long-term backup!

With some developing and grooming over the next year or two, Riley Ferguson could become a stable backup for Mahomes. That’s more important than people think.
