Kansas City Chiefs: 5 Former Chiefs Could Return
#5 Sean Smith – CB – Raiders
It was as safe a bet as you could have made when Sean Smith left the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency. The Chiefs made a play to re-sign him, but we all knew that somebody would offer him big money. That somebody was the Raiders, but now their “buyer’s remorse” may allow for Smith to come back to Kansas City.
Sean Smith isn’t actually a free agent yet, but a lot of people expect it to happen, especially in light of his current legal issues. Apart from that though, the veteran cornerback has simply not been a good fit in the Oakland defense. Even before the Raiders made a coaching change it was expected that Smith was gone. Now it seems almost like a guarantee.
The big thing here though is that Kansas City would not be bringing Sean Smith in to start. The Chiefs are set in that regard, but they need some depth. Smith is in need of a reset where he can showcase his ability. KC might not be ideal for him in terms of exposure for a new deal, but he knows he can excel in that system.
It’s probably not a likely re-signing, but don’t overlook the possibility. Smith is in his 30s and coming off a pair of lackluster seasons. He’s not going to be getting very many big offers.
