Members of the Kansas City Chiefs sounded off after the Alex Smith trade went down and they will clearly miss their veteran quarterback.

Fans are still processing the news that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is off to Washington to take snaps in a Redskins uniform next year. It was a robbery for the Chiefs, who got Kendall Fuller (a talented cornerback) and a third round draft pick from the Redskins in exchange for Smith.

Smith was coming off the best year of his long career, but he wasn’t in Kansas City’s future plans. The team obviously saw Washington’s deal as a can’t miss opportunity and couldn’t sign that deal fast enough. Of course, the trade won’t be official until March, but it’d be pretty damaging to Washington’s already sketchy reputation if they backed out of this trade.

Smith was a good guy and that was often the consensus around Kansas City. Chiefs fans might not have liked him as a football player, but it was hard to dislike him as a person. His teammates felt the same way, voicing their opinions on the inter webs after the trade went public.

The guys he played with on offense really made it clear that they’d miss their signal caller. Travis Kelce, Mitch Morse, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, and Tyreek Hill were just a few of the guys who weighed in on their offensive leader moving onto the next chapter of his playing career.

Usually when a team gets a new or young (or in this case, both) quarterback, the offense is expected to decline. That’s not the case with the KC Chiefs next year, however, as Patrick Mahomes is going to have a hey day throwing to the likes of Kelce and Hill.

Kelce was drafted the same year Smith was traded to Kansas City, so the two have worked together for Kelce’s entire career. It’s obvious that Kelce has a huge amount of respect for his quarterback, but you could definitely tell at times (at least during the bad games) that he was frustrated with his lack of targets.

The defensive players also paid their respects to Alex Smith with the most surprising coming from Marcus Peters. Peters doesn’t tweet much, but even he had to salute his former teammate.

It was a very “Marcus Peters” type of tweet with him merely just listing Smith’s jersey number. Chris Jones won the award for funniest tribute, both acknowledging his respect for Smith and slighting Tyler Bray at the same time.

It’s nice to see so many players send off their quarterback with such nice comments. Alex Smith wasn’t the best quarterback in the world, but he did a lot for the Kansas City Chiefs in his five years with the organization and he’ll easily go down as one of the best to ever play the position.

While Smith will have to go play for a franchise that didn’t even let Kendall Fuller know he was being traded (see below), it could have been much worse for Smith.

Smith could have been sent somewhere like Cleveland or Buffalo (they made the playoffs last year, but come on… It’s Buffalo). Washington will be a competitive team, but the team is widely known for their disorganization.

Now that the Alex Smith chapter is over here in Kansas City, it’s time to start the next chapter and it’s beautifully titled “Patrick Mahomes”. Anyone who isn’t excited about what the future holds is crazy.

These are going to be a fun next few years, my friends.
