Kansas City Chiefs: Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
The Market Emerges
The situation that Alex Smith created for the Kansas City Chiefs quickly turned into significant interest this offseason. It really didn’t take long at all for the rumors of the Smith market to hit the public. The opening salvo of bids were regarding a second-round pick. From there it quickly became a second-round pick and future picks. We see where it ended up.
What is truly amazing here though is that not even a month into the offseason, the Chiefs already had a reported five suitors for Alex Smith. That includes the Browns, Jaguars, BIlls, Broncos, and Redskins. Each team with their own separate storyline involved.

Browns: Apparently Cleveland offered up at least a second-round pick. However, because they weren’t willing to give Alex Smith a decent contract extension, the Chiefs closed the door on this. Looking out for Smith is a class move by Andy Reid. Sorry Dorsey.
Jaguars: An early contender for Alex Smith, it appears the market got too rich for them when the Redskins jumped in. After being linked to Smith, Jacksonville suddenly committed to Blake Bortles the day he went in for wrist surgery. An odd time to do so.
Bills: Buffalo was linked by a couple of sources, but the big news was that GM Brandon Beane was having extensive talks with Alex Smith’s agent. While it’s possible that they were discussing other players…no, no it really isn’t. They were talking Smith.
Broncos: There was a lot of talk started up when local Denver reporter Mike Klis said the Broncos would have to offer a second-round pick and Aqib Talib. That offer was apparently real, but the Chiefs promptly said they weren’t trading Alex Smith within the division.
Redskins: The eventual “winner” of the Alex Smith sweepstakes, Washington absolutely came in over the top. It makes you wonder what their early offers were, and how quickly they jumped up to offering a young and talented player.
Speaking of that final offer…
