Kansas City Chiefs: Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
Alex Smith Steps Up His Game
Of course, the Kansas City Chiefs could have gotten a whole lot less for Alex Smith than what they ended up with. A lot of the inner workings of this trade have everything to do with the season that Smith had. When everything was on the line, the veteran quarterback stepped up and had his best season in the NFL at just the right moment.
QB Alex Smith and Washington now have reached an agreement on a new four-year contract extension, per sources. Smith, who had one year left on his contact, tied to Washington for next five seasons. Smith gets long-term deal from Washington that Cousins could not.

The simple truth is that a quarterback who has five straight winning seasons (including four postseason trips), and a 4000 yard performance isn’t supposed to be available. Guys with those kinds of resumes simply do not get traded. Yet that is the exact situation that the Chiefs found themselves in.
Alex Smith absolutely balled out this year for KC, knowing that it was his future that was on the line. The veteran quarterback had a career year, and it resulted in him getting a solid contract from his new team that may be the last of his career. Not a bad situation for Smith or the Chiefs.
