ROUND 3: PICK 22 (86TH OVERALL) – NICK NELSON, CB (WISCONSIN)

EDITOR’S NOTE – As mentioned on the first slide, the need for a corner is no longer as big due to the acquisition of Kendall Fuller. Please take note of that.

As expected, the Chiefs turn to their other strong need with their next pick and grab a cornerback out of Wisconsin in Nick Nelson. Nelson only spent a year at Wisconsin and spent the first two years of his collegiate career at Hawaii.

Nelson, now forgoing his senior year and entering the draft, could immediately address a lot of needs for the KC Chiefs. The Chiefs have Marcus Peters locking up one side of the field, but the other side is a big ol’ mystery.

For one, Darrelle Revis might not even be back with the team due to his salary. If Revis does return, he’s not the unquestioned number two starter. The rest of the cornerbacks on the roster are hitting the free agent market, so the Chiefs have to add some corners.

Nick Nelson is who they go for and he ended his college career with 122 tackles, 21 defended passes, two forced fumbles, and one sack. He didn’t have any interceptions during his three-year college career between two universities.

Nelson also has experience in the return game, which is another need for the Chiefs. Nelson returned both kicks and punts during his college career, but was predominantly a punt returner.

The Chiefs really need help in the secondary, namely at the cornerback spot, and Nick Nelson is hopefully the first step towards rebuilding that position.
