WORST MOMENTS FOR MU FANS – NUMBER 3: BEATEN AT THE BUZZER

1995 NCAA TOURNAMENT (MARCH 20, 1995 vs UCLA)

The 1994-1995 season was a memorable one for Missouri basketball and it had the potential to be one of the best seasons in Mizzou hoops history. Instead, it ended in heartbreak and disappointment, something that MU fans have grown accustom to.

The Tigers went 19-8 on the season and earned an eight seed in the NCAA Tournament in 1995. They defeated the nine-seeded Indiana Hoosiers to advance to the second round. In that round, MU had to face the top seeded UCLA Bruins, a very good hoops program at that time.

Missouri played the Bruins tough and really should have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. Instead, the Bruins did what a lot of other teams tend to do against Mizzou: Hand them another heartbreaking loss that they’d still remember to this day.

UCLA was down by one point with 4.8 seconds remaining and it looked certain that Mizzou would be headed to the Sweet Sixteen. Instead, the Bruins went the length of the court, shot the ball with time on the clock, and both teams held their breath as the ball went through the bucket. The buzzer sounded right then and the UCLA bench and fans went nuts.

This was a classic Missouri moment, but it hurt even more seeing the Bruins go on to win the National Championship that season. It’s not like Tiger fans thought they’d win it all that year, but knowing they had the eventual champions on the ropes only to lose on a buzzer beater was one of the biggest blows a fan base could endure.

Basketball hasn’t been kind to the Tiger faithful and that’s even more evident with our next entry. Buckle up Missouri fans… This one still hurts.
