Best Kansas basketball seasons all-time:

  • ’65-’66 Kansas Jayhawks
  • Head coach: Ted Owens
  • Results: 24-3 Elite Eight

Ted Owens is responsible for 348 wins for the Jayhawks. In the ’65-’66 season, Kansas went 23-4 and were one of the most dominant squads in the country . Owens also coached one of the finer Jayhawk players to have ever played, Jo Jo White.

During the ’65-’66 season the Jayhawks were dominant, all the way until they faced Don Haskins and Texas Western. If you have seen the movie Glory Road, you know the outcome. In a back and forth match, Kansas had a chance to win at the end of the first overtime. With seven seconds left White hit a three while falling out-of-bounds. The referee called White’s foot on the out-of-bounds line, sending the game to a second overtime. After celebration turned to shock, Texas Western won the game and went on to win the championship.

Jo Jo White went on to lead the United States to gold in the ’67 Pan-Am games and the ’68 Olympics. He won two NBA titles with the Boston Celtics and is a Hall of Famer in both the collegiate and professional levels.

White argued that he never stepped out-of-bounds the rest of his life.
