Kansas City Chiefs: 2017 Rookie Breakdown

Quarterback: Patrick Mahomes II

Wait, Patrick who? Just kidding. The first round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs changed the whole dynamic of the franchise. The Chiefs traded up 17 spots to acquire him, and gave Chiefs fans reasons to believe the future was even brighter than before.

Patrick Mahomes II is the next man up. The next man up with plenty to fill in for. Especially after Alex Smith’s year 13 campaign. As I am writing this, I want to take the time to warn my readers. No, this is nothing bad, but it is a warning I find very appropriate. If Smith is traded away by the Chiefs, the quarterback play will not be the same, at all.

In the near future, there is going to be growing pains with Patrick Mahomes behind center. He is not going to have a 15:0 touchdown to interception ratio. Mahomes simply is going to throw more interceptions. I am not bashing Mahomes style of play, because I LOVE it. Interceptions are just part of his “gunslinging” mentality.

In his debut, Patrick Mahomes had a 62.9% completion rate off of a 22 completions out of 35 passing attempts type of performance. He may have had one interception, but those mistakes are expected from the young, and juiced-up quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes was selected tenth overall in the 2017 NFL draft. When the Kansas City Chiefs made this move, the whole entire franchise had their eyes set on the young quarterback. So yes, the future is in his hands… no pressure.

Patrick Mahomes makes me, and the rest of Chiefs Kingdom so excited for the future. He has all of the potential in the world to be a legendary quarterback for the Chiefs. Yes, I said it – legendary.
