Kansas City Chiefs: A weapon on the practice squad is Chiefs best kept secret
By Chris Taylor
Welcome to Kansas City
Shortly after that phone call, Gehrig found himself in Kansas City. Few with knowledge of the Chiefs knew about Gehrig, but it didn’t take long for a buzz to float around about this kid from Indiana.
Through training camp his name was being thrown around as one to watch, he even garnered a nickname by coach Reid, “Sheepdog.”
Dieter was consistently called one of the hardest workers, often staying after practice to work with Mahomes. Patrick said this about Dieter before the preseason.
"He’s a fighter. He’s someone who goes out there and competes at everything he does. You need guys like him, guys who are going to lay it out on the line every single play, every single game. You see that in Gehrig."
Things were looking good for Gehrig during the preseason, until the final week. With his family and fiance Meg present and the quarterback he not only worked with every day, but also lived with, starting, Gehrig imagined this would be a signature game.
The always sure-handed receiver dropped his first target, and that was it for the rest of the game. A beautifully written piece by his wife-to-be describing that experience, as well as the days after, sets the table for how cruel the process of making a team can be.
