5 reasons the Chiefs will be better in 2018

#5 Alex Smith will be gone

In all honesty, Smith wasn’t the problem. Perhaps he was part of it, but he wasn’t worthy of being the scapegoat. From a fans point of view, Smith was not a bum, not like the previous quarterbacks before him. Smith has done more at quarterback for the Chiefs than anyone since perhaps Len Dawson. Joe Montana just wasn’t around long enough.

Smith did lack a killer instinct, sometimes it seemed he lacked instinct of any kind. Despite the play-calling not being up to par, Smith was never able to figure out a way around the play that was called. He had a tendency to dump the ball to a receiver in the flat far too often, which defenses keyed on easily. Finding the open guy downfield was an issue as well. That was magnified when Tyreek Hill came into the league.

Very few times did Alex Smith have a game where he absolutely wowed you. He very rarely pulled the rabbit out of the hat to make those amazing comebacks or crucial drives. His play on the field was in fact very vanilla.

Smith will be gone thanks to the salary cap situation that Kansas City find themselves in. The Chiefs will free up enough money with the absence of Alex Smith to make vital additions and retain important players. The move makes sense, trade him for a couple of mid to late round draft picks and move on. The era is over.
