The Kansas City Chiefs are making a lot of changes this offseason. Many fans would like to see Bob Sutton as one of them. Here are ten options to replace him.

I don’t necessarily believe that the Kansas City Chiefs need to move on from Bob Sutton. A lot of the issues with the Chiefs defense right now are more about personnel than scheme. However, there is a lot of chatter on this subject, and I do have to say that there is some logic to it. So let’s take a look at how KC could move on.

The Chiefs defense is not what we are used to. Over the past decade, Kansas City fans were used to the defensive side of the ball being what we could rely on. However, in 2017 that just wasn’t the case. With KC already making a number of big changes this offseason, it might make sense to go ahead and do this as well. Rip off the band aid, as it were.

However, replacing Bob Sutton is not going to be that easy. It also isn’t going to be a fix all. Kansas City will still have quite a few personnel issues that have to be addressed for any coach to have success. Even then, finding a new defensive coordinator is not that simple. There are plenty of coaches that fail at this job.

Chiefs Kingdom will have to trust Andy Reid and Brett Veach on this. I can’t really argue that Kansas City has a good internal crop of candidates, though there are certainly some options. While Andy Reid does have a strong coaching tree, he’s not particularly known for developing defensive coaches.

3-4 Is Not A Sticking Point

In my many conversations with Kansas City Chiefs fans on who could replace Bob Sutton, I’ve noticed a strange trend. Many in Chiefs Kingdom seem intent on sticking with the 3-4 defense. I don’t really understand why. How can you argue that KC is in need of a big change…just not that big of a change?

I mean, honestly, what has the 3-4 defense actually brought to Kansas City? To my recollection, we are just 1-5 in the playoffs with the 3-4. That includes a blowout loss to the Ravens in 2011, an historic collapse to the Colts in 2014, and another historic failure just this offseason. Just what is it that you are trying to stick with?

If KC is really all about making changes for the better, then they need to be open-minded. It’s actually easier to find the personnel for a 4-3 front than a 3-4. In fact, Kansas City already has a number of players who would fit in pretty well in a 4-3 defense. Let’s not miss out on a great candidate for something this foolish.
