The 2017 NFL season is over and we now turn our attention to the offseason. The most pressing question for the Kansas City Chiefs is what to do with Alex Smith.

Another season ended in disappointment, and Kansas City Chiefs fans are once again turning to the offseason much earlier than hoped. Fortunately, this offseason looks to be a particularly interesting one for Kansas City as the team contemplates what to do with quarterback Alex Smith.

With Patrick Mahomes being so heavily invested in, and having a solid debut, there is no doubt that Kansas City wants to move on to him. That makes Alex Smith an expendable commodity with a big cap number. The Chiefs best bet is to try and trade him to free up cap space and try to add some resources in return.

The good news there is that Alex Smith had a career year in 2017, going over 4000 yards passing. We saw a side of the veteran quarterback that had never been seen before. That should be something that is very enticing to many teams looking for a quarterback this offseason. That is definitely to the Chiefs advantage.

A (Nearly) Perfectly Executed Plan

We knew from the moment that Patrick Mahomes was drafted that the Kansas City Chiefs would look to trade Alex Smith this offseason. The Chiefs have done a great job of downplaying that, but they are just waiting on a good offer. With the developments over the past year, that plan is now looking brilliant.

There will be a robust market for Alex Smith this year. Between retirements, a lack of quality starting quarterbacks, and a draft class that didn’t live up to expectations, plenty of teams will consider Smith. The Chiefs are now in a great position to take advantage of the market and get a much higher return than originally expected.

Of course, it would have been much better if the Chiefs had a better showing in the playoffs. Still, there will be a robust market. Here are the teams most likely to pursue Alex Smith this offseason…
