Kansas City Chiefs: 5 young players to watch
By Ben Almquist
The Kansas City Chiefs will be featuring some of their youngsters this week against the Broncos. Here are five of them you want to pay special attention to.
We have gotten confirmation from Andy Reid that the Kansas City Chiefs will be resting some of their starters this week. It’s not too big of a surprise give Reid’s history in these situations. Giving his players a break ahead of the playoffs should help them get a little healthier and refreshed. It also means some young players will get their shot.
This is always a big opportunity for a team to find out about its young talent, but that is especially true for Kansas City this year. The Chiefs 2017 draft class was selected with the intent that they would see very little action this year. Apart from Kareem Hunt (who only started due to an injury), the rookie class hasn’t seen much playing time.
Patrick Mahomes, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Jehu Chesson, Ukeme Eligwe, and Leon McQuay haven’t seen the field very much at all this year. Each of them should get an opportunity to play extensively this Sunday, along with a bunch of other second and third year guys. This is where we see what the future of the Chiefs looks like.
Chiefs Need Some Answers
Of course, there are some players that we need to see more of than others. Like all teams, the Chiefs have certain positions that are locked up long term, and others that have some big questions ahead. The team has taken some steps towards answering those questions. Now it’s time to find out if those were the right steps.
Most notably, Kansas City has questions pending in multiple spots on the defense. At different times this year, we have seen that side of the ball struggle in all aspects. The secondary, pass rush, and run defense have all had their issues. So getting answers will be important.
Oh yeah, there’s also a little question as to the future of the quarterback position.
