There has been a ton of speculation about who the Kansas City Chiefs will start at quarterback in the final game of the season. Here are five reasons it won’t be Patrick Mahomes.

With a convincing 29-13 win over the Miami Dolphins, the Kansas City Chiefs have locked up the AFC West and a playoff berth. The Chiefs will be the #4 seed no matter what. That means there isn’t much to play for on Sunday, which has some people thinking Patrick Mahomes will get the start. However, that is not a guaranteed outcome.

There are plenty of reasons why Kansas City should put Patrick Mahomes out there on Sunday. First and foremost, Mahomes could certainly use the playing time to help develop. With “nothing to lose”, the rookie quarterback could go out and make mistakes that he can learn from without costing the Chiefs anything.

On top of that, there is no doubt that the KC coaching staff would like to get their key starters some rest ahead of the playoffs. BYE weeks are a treasured asset in the NFL. One less week on the field is one less chance to get hurt. So the Chiefs really are in a great spot as far as that is concerned.

It would also give the Kansas City leadership a chance to assess what they have for the future. The Chiefs will have some big roster decisions coming up this offseason, so they definitely want as much information as possible. Patrick Mahomes is the future of the organization, so it makes sense to see how he works with his future teammates.

However, there are also some very good reasons why the Kansas City Chiefs should hold off on starting their rookie quarterback. The truth is that we never really know what is going on behind the scenes of an NFL team. So something that might make sense on paper, really isn’t a great idea. Here are five reasons why starting Patrick Mahomes may not be the way to go on Sunday…
