BEST HEAD COACHES OF ALL-TIME FOR MU – NUMBER 4: GEORGE EDWARDS

Mizzou Basketball Head Coach from 1926-1946

Okay, so this one takes us way back in time, likely before anyone reading this was born, but it’s hard to disregard what George Edwards did while the head coach for the Missouri Tigers.

Edwards was a true Missouri guy, playing his college ball there and then eventually landing as their head coach for 20 seasons. He took over for George Bond and led the Tigers (who were a part of the Missouri Valley Conference for the first two seasons of his tenure) to an overall record of 353-181.

The Tigers went to just one NCAA Tournament under Edwards (that being in 1944), but they were regular season champions in the Big Six on three separate occasions (1930, 1939, 1940). It’s also worth noting that the NCAA Tournament did not become a thing until 1939.

Edwards was a busy guy while in Columbia, serving as MU’s Athletic Director from 1943-1945 (yes, while he was still coaching). He was a huge piece for Missouri athletics.

Even though none of us were alive to witness in person what George Edwards accomplished for Mizzou, he was still a big part of their basketball program and goes down as one of the best coaches to ever step foot in Columbia.
