Kansas City Chiefs: Alex Smith simply has to be better
By Ben Almquist
The Kansas City Chiefs are spiraling, and Alex Smith has a lot to do with it. However, the best hope for this team salvaging the season rests with Smith turning it around.
Another chance for the Kansas City Chiefs to turn things around ended in abject failure this weekend. The Chiefs managed to be outscored by a Buffalo Bills team that has been falling apart in recent weeks. There is no doubt that the problem right now is the KC offense…and Alex Smith is a major reason why.
I don’t know what happened, but ever since the Steelers game we just have not seen the same Alex Smith that started the 2017 season. The aggressive downfield passing has given way to poor reads and check downs. The cool demeanor has been replaced with happy feat. The talk of an MVP season seems like ancient history now.
Over the past several weeks, Alex Smith has just been flat out bad. While not everything that has gone wrong is on him, enough of it certainly is. More than that though, if there is any hope of this team turning things around, it’s Smith who has to lead that charge.
Alex Smith Needs His Swagger Back
The Kansas City Chiefs 2017 season started off with a bang, and Alex Smith was the primary reason for it. With his future on the line, Smith came out with an aggressive approach that we have never seen from him before. The end result was some very impressive wins over quality football teams.
That’s what the Chiefs need now. You can point to a lot of areas where the team can improve, but if Kansas City doesn’t get that play and attitude from Alex Smith, nothing else will change. The KC coaching staff is well-aware of this, even if they aren’t coming out and saying it.
There are plenty of opinions out there on what Kansas City should be doing right now. You will see a lot of mention of Patrick Mahomes for weeks to come. It’s understandable, but quarterback changes rarely work out. It was Alex Smith who had this team playing like contenders, and it is Smith who must get them back to that point.
