K-State Football: Rise of Skylar Thompson as Wildcats quarterback
K-State football pulled off a second straight thrilling victory, this time against the Iowa State Cyclones.
The Wildcats didn’t even managed a touchdown until 6:07 remained in the game, yet managed to do enough under future superstar Skylar Thompson to win 20-19. Both teams finish the season at 7-5, yet I suspect fans feel differently. K-State finishes on a two game winning streak, with wins over Oklahoma State and ISU. Iowa State finishes losing three of four.
This was nuts. There’s no other way to describe it. If you are a fan of the Cyclones, I don’t even know what to say. K-State owns this series as they ran their wining streak to 10 games. And for the second time in three years it was done so in a heart-breaking and brutal way. (Google/Youtube Iowa State debacle 2015.)
However, I think K-State fans only need to say “you’re welcome.” In 2015 the K-State victory led to the firing of Paul Rhoads. In 2017, it may lead to Matt Campbell sticking around for another year.
K-State, in the year of frustration, had another frustrating effort as the offense failed to do anything for 3.5 quarters. Iowa State has the third ranked defense in the Big12, but it’s not a special unit. And it was not doing anything special.
K-State ran another lazy, boring, and inspired offensive game plan. They used slow developing run plays that have been easily guessed since the game against Vanderbilt. However, “The Franchise” Skylar Thompson managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and carry the Wildcats.
There is a lot of football and non-football stuff to break down, so let’s get started.
