There really isn’t much to recap from the Kansas football game against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, but the drama with Baker Mayfield was pretty amusing.

KU fans didn’t expect anything big from their team on Saturday. The Jayhawks were welcoming in the fourth ranked Oklahoma Sooners to Memorial Stadium in Lawrence and the chances of winning were as close to zero as one could get.

The game went as expected with Kansas getting blown out, but the Jayhawks sure made it interesting, creating drama with Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman hopeful Baker Mayfield. Despite only having one win on the year, KU had some pretty big stones at the beginning of the game.

What happened was the captains were on the field for the coin flip, which happens before every game. When going to shake hands, Mayfield approached the Kansas captains and was left hanging. It was quite hilarious.

Some might have thought this was bad sportsmanship, but I laughed. Kansas probably shouldn’t have done that because I personally would have been afraid of Mayfield playing angry against my squad, but it was still amusing.

Mayfield continued to be irritated with the folks in Lawrence. He was pummeled (after getting rid of the football) on what was called a roughing the passer play on KU and looked hurt afterwards. After that, Mayfield was caught doing an inappropriate gesture on the sideline.

… but wait, there’s more! Baker Mayfield wasn’t done insulting Kansas football or its fans. Apparently the folks in Lawrence attending the game were giving Mayfield a hard time, so he had some sound advice for them.

Baker Mayfield really didn’t need to do any of this, but to be fair, the Kansas captains disrespected him by not shaking his hand and that clearly was in his head all day long. His gesture and comments, however, were directed at the fan base though and not the players that refused to shake his hand.

At the end of the day, does any of this matter and will Baker Mayfield get in trouble? Probably not, no. Mayfield might get talked to about the gesture, but if he was being heckled by fans, then he might not be in as much of trouble.

The truth of the matter is that Baker Mayfield was clearly frustrated by Kansas Jayhawks fans and is likely happy about never having to play in Lawrence ever again. Just imagine if he winds up in Denver and has to play in Kansas City once a year in the NFL. He’ll dread those Sundays.
