Kansas City Chiefs: Mid Season Gradecards
By Chris Taylor
Secondary: F
Marcus Peters is the extra credit this secondary needs if they’re going to receive a passing grade by the end of the season. Peters will have to play superbly for the remaining stretch, as any mistakes he makes out on the field may not be possible to overcome.
This isn’t Peter’s fault, it’s the remaining secondary group that has routinely been destroyed by opposing offenses. It appears as though it doesn’t matter who the Chiefs put out there opposite Marcus, they get beat.
Terrance Mitchell was supposed to be the guy, as last season he showed he had the talent to fight for the starting gig. To be fair, it turns out the starting gig isn’t as hard to get in Kansas City as it is in New England or Seattle. Mitchell has been a tough draw at times, but the inconsistency and the penalties have caused many a hardship for the Chiefs.
The return of Steven Nelson gives the Chiefs a slight advantage over the alternative, Phillip Gaines. Phillip Gaines doesn’t deserve a full sentence here so far this season.
The loss of Eric Berry has lost the Chiefs at least one game, the Oakland game. The massive amount of penalties thrown on the safety position in that game led to the second loss of the season. Eric Murray was called for two separate penalties as that game came to a close. Twice time had run out.
Daniel Sorenson is who he is. He can play football and his effort out plays his talent, he isn’t an every down safety though. Ron Parker hasn’t played up to par by his own standards either, but there is still time for him and others to turn things around.
Even with Marcus Peters, this group struggles. Especially since a pass rush is not evident. F is the grade here. Please let me know why I’m wrong.
