Mediocrity Perfected

The Kansas City Chiefs are 6-3, two games up in the AFC West, and are just a mid-tier team. The Chiefs have been in this position for a few seasons now, usually it’s the defense that saves the day. This season however, the offense has bailed out the defense.

Alex Smith is having a season for all seasons. Despite the Chiefs record, his numbers are still amongst the top. In reality the Chiefs record is quite refreshing due to the schedule they have had. The majority of Chiefs Kingdom would be happy with a 6-3 record since the remaining schedule favors the Chiefs.

The staff may be over thinking themselves. Kareem Hunt has all the talent in the world. Nine touches per game just doesn’t cut it. It’s hard to utilize the tools at your disposal if you never take them out of the box.

There is no killer instinct, no attitude. Plenty of entertaining touchdown celebrations, but the significance of those are dampened by losses.

The last four games have been unimpressive. The win against Denver even felt wrong. Take away the five turnovers and the Chiefs lose by two scores in that game. The defense is soft, the offense is hesitant.

There are good teams in the NFL.  The Kansas City Chiefs are one of them, almost. That’s not to say the Chiefs aren’t a playoff team, or might even go far in the playoffs, but the Chiefs have done this before.

I expect the Chiefs to lose another game or two, it’s in their DNA. I also am not writing them off as Super Bowl contenders. The facts are, this team has holes that need to be filled, by either new personnel or new schematics.
