Five Intriguing Players Yet to Hit Potential – Number 1: Patrick Mahomes
Who is Patrick Mahomes exactly? Just kidding.
Mahomes currently is the quarterback of the future in Kansas City, as all eyes are on him within the next couple of years to be the franchise quarterback the Chiefs have been desperately searching for. It was a bold move to move up 17 spots, and draft Mahomes sparked perhaps the most eye-popping move in franchise history.
Mahomes owns that intriguing gunslinger mentality, that very few lack in the game today. The future star is the most polar opposite of all quarterbacks to the current quarterback in Alex Smith. Drafting Mahomes was an interesting development, as the offense will shift to deep throw pass heavy, less conservative styled offensive playbook in Kansas City.
My favorite thing to think about when it comes to Mahomes as a starter is his incredible arm strength. I cannot wait to see Mahomes connecting on 60 yard bombs across his chest to Tyreek Hill zooming down the sidelines. How fun would it be to see him do things in the NFL similar to his college highlight reel?
As I wipe the drool from my chin just talking about Mahomes, I must say – he needs work fundamentally, but once those are fixed as best as possible, might I say Brett Favre 2.0 is in the making?
When will the Chiefs unleash Mahomes?
The answer lies solely on the front office and on Alex Smith. When the franchise is ready to move on is when Mahomes will be named the starter.
When the franchise is ready to move on is when Mahomes will be named the starter.
Smith is having an MVP caliber season, as he has made the Kansas City Chiefs an even more incredible team this season. Smith is currently the starter, although his contract with the Chiefs ends in 2019.
The time in which the team moves on from Smith relies solely within the organization. Perhaps the team will give him one more shot next season, if the team once again falls short in the playoffs, or Mahomes will be the starter in 2018. That is about as simple as it gets, because I do not know the answer to when mahomes will be the starting quarterback.
Whatever the case may be, just keep in mind one thing – The Mahomes era is inching closer, and closer.
