Kansas City Chiefs: The Day After Chaos in Oakland
By Chris Taylor
the defense of the kansas city chiefs
The defense of the Kansas City Chiefs doesn’t deserve to be capitalized. I am aware of the grammatical error.
Of course I’m going to mention the lack of a defense.
Is it safe to say the defense for the Chiefs is bad yet?
Happening right in front of our eyes is the defense being figured out by teams in the NFL. It’s been excruciatingly worse each week.
The lack of a pass rush is not as disturbing as whatever you want to call the Chiefs secondary play.
It seems as though Phillip Gaines was playing each position back there.
If you are just now crawling out from under your rock, Gaines has been playing awful so far this season.
It wasn’t Gaines against Oakland that killed the Chiefs, rather it was the play of Terrance Mitchell, Eric Murray and Ron Parker.
On two potential scores the secondary flaked at the worst time. On two potential stops the secondary made two horrible holding penalties away from the ball to give them a chance.
The fifth time was the charm. When you give a quarterback like Derek Carr five opportunities to win the game, chances are you lose. And that’s what happened.
The secondary lost the game all by themselves.
Derek Carr looked like the best quarterback in the league, which is easy to do when playing the Chiefs this season.
Carr passed for 417 yards for three touchdowns. Including the last second touchdown to Michael Crabtree.
Amari Cooper had himself a cake walk against the team in red. His 11 receptions totalled for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
The defense did fine against a mediocre run game. Marshawn Lynch was ejected for touching a referee and this replacements did nothing worth mentioning.
The secondary play should be what’s talked about. Today, tomorrow and next week. Something has to give, something has to change back there.
For whatever reason the defensive backs believe it is their job to allow the receiver to catch the ball, so they can then attempt a tackle. Tackling is something they aren’t real good at either.
