KU Basketball: Going for 14 straight conference titles
By Chris Taylor
The Kansas Jayhawks will be going for their 14th straight conference title in the 2017-2018 season.
Sitting at 13 consecutive titles is an accomplishment in and of itself, last season’s title tied the record held by UCLA from 1967-1979. The pressure is doubled for this years squad.
What Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks team has accomplished the past 13 seasons is unheard of in college basketball. In a time where collegiate competition is at an all-time high, to rack up 13 conference titles in a career is an accomplishment. Let alone 13 straight.
Hall of Fame coach Bill Self has put every type of team on the court during this streak. Kansas has had teams with great inside scoring, great outside shooting, great defense, and a few teams with a little of each.
Some of the focus nationally has been the lack of multiple national championships during this streak. The Championship in 2008 with Mario’s miracle shot being the lone one.
Ask any Kansas fan out there, and the response will go something like “Yeah, but we are Kansas!”
Winning the Big 12 each year is the goal for Kansas basketball. Bill Self has alluded to that fact on multiple occasions. They break their huddles all year yelling the same exact thing.
This is the season that the Kansas Jayhawks toward which they’ve have been striving. The chance to stand alone with a Conference record that more than likely will not be broken for years to come.
