Kansas City Chiefs draft watch: Week 1 prospects
By Ben Almquist
The opening week of college football has wrapped up. Here are some of the players the Kansas City Chiefs should have their eyes on for the 2018 draft.
It’s never too early to get a jump on the next NFL draft. With the college football season fully underway, the Kansas City Chiefs will have their scouts already traveling the country looking for talent. We’ll be doing much the same here as we track players of interest for the Chiefs in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Of course, the big thing for the 2018 draft is that the Chiefs will now have to start thinking about how they will build this team around Patrick Mahomes. The rookie quarterback may sit this entire season, but I doubt that will be the case in 2018. Kansas City has to approach this team as being all about Mahomes moving forward.
Building around Patrick Mahomes largely concerns the offense, and that shouldn’t be a surprise. However, the Chiefs will also need to make considerations on the defensive side of the ball. 2018 will feature several important players looking at free agency. Kansas City will have to make some big decisions regarding the future there.
What Positions To Scout
A lot can change over the course of the upcoming season. However, there are some positions that we should know to start scouting now. The ones that stand out to me are wide receiver, cornerback, defensive tackle, running back, and tight end. That’s not to say the Chiefs don’t have talent there, but other considerations come into play.
Pending free agents is one of the biggest things to take into consideration for the Chiefs. However, they will also need to look at their depth chart. That’s how I make my determinations on what positions to scout. Fortunately, there was no shortage of impressive talent for me to keep an eye on this weekend.
