SEPTEMBER CALL UPS – RAUL MONDESI JR.

Remember when Raul Mondesi Jr. won the starting second base job at the beginning of the year? Well, he went on to slash a weak .095/.156/.167 in 42 at bats and was sent to the minors within the first few weeks of the season.

While Mondesi’s 2017 Royals campaign didn’t work out, the kid is only 22 years old and can flat out fly.

Once Mondesi got sent down and Whit Merrifield was called up, fans didn’t think Mondesi would be in the minors for the duration of the year, but that’s just what happened. Merrifield made it really difficult to consider anyone else at second base and he’s firmly kept that job.

Mondesi is hopefully going to be the future at shortstop, but we all saw that he just wasn’t ready offensively at the big league level. He’s batting .304 with the Stormchasers and has hit eight home runs in 312 at bats.

While Mondesi’s 2017 Royals campaign didn’t work out, the kid is only 22 years old and can flat out fly. He’ll be an option to have pinch run this September, and if the Royals somehow make it to the playoffs (they’ll need to score runs to do that), then Mondesi will be a nice piece to have on the bench.
