The popular Netflix series “Last Chance U” has changed up its game plan for its third season, shifting to Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas.

“Last Chance U” has begun its third season, and the Netflix series is changing more than just the team it is covering. The storylines out of the ICC Pirates presented in this series promise to be different as well.

Last Chance U follows young college players who have dreams of playing at the professional level. It has had two seasons over the past year, premiering its first episode last July on Netflix, where the entire two seasons can be found.

According to a press release from Independence Community College, the Pirates fit well within the usual narrative of the award-winning series in some ways. Many of their players are former NCAA D1 prospects, who struggled at that level due to academic or social difficulties. It’s the program itself that presents a different narrative.

The Pirates have had just two winning seasons over the past 30 years, but are coming off their first such campaign in a decade under now second-year head coach Jason Brown. That’s a stark differentiation from the program, which was the subject of the series’ first two seasons, East Mississippi Community College. Nina Mandell of USA Today reports that EMCC was a powerhouse even before Netflix began its series there.

Another thing that is consistent from the first two series to the one currently in production is the reputation of the coaches for rehabilitating players for the FBS ranks. Coach Brown has been credited with turning around former Florida State quarterback Malik Henry among other players.

The Pirates opened up their season at home against Iowa Western Community College on Saturday, Aug. 26, falling by a score of 70-21. After beginning their conference season on the road on Saturday, Sept. 2, ICC will return home to face Garden City Community College for another home game on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.

It has not yet been announced when the new season of the show will be available for Netflix subscribers to stream. Regardless of how the season goes for the Pirates, the series promises to deliver more of the football-centric drama that has made it popular for the last two years.

The fact that this is occurring somewhat locally should pull in more people from the area too. At least that’s the hope.
