FIVE COOLEST NICKNAMES FOR PLAYERS WEEKEND: NUMBER 3 – “HAMMER”

It’s always cool when one of your starting pitchers decides to describe himself as a hammer, and that’s what Jason Hammel did in this case. He went with the nickname “Hammer” for his jersey, which is similar to his last name, but also is his nickname (probably for that reason).

I wouldn’t have thought that Hammel would have wanted to join in on the fun nickname aspect, as several of the pitchers on the team decided to be lame and just use their last names. I’m glad to see Hammel take part in the nicknaming aspect.

Hammel has been reliable in the second half of the season and his ERA currently sits at 4.73 in 25 starts. He’s stayed healthy all season and really has become the “Hammer” of the rotation as of lately.

Hammel got to rep his jersey on Saturday against the Indians, which meant that at least he got to wear it on the mound, unlike some of his teammates. He was throwing a no hitter until the seventh inning, but the Royals would go on to lose 4-0.
